Windy Days Photography Tips

Looking at some of these photos, you might not have guessed that the winds were about 25 mph that day. Guess what, they 100 percent were and living in a city where winds are almost non-existent those are some mighty fast winds! I’m not going to lie; I woke up nervous about the session in the wind and having so many moving parts for this photo shoot.
In a way, I pretended the wind wasn’t there as though not to psyche myself or the other gals out. I was determined to make this a great experience for everyone and knew that if it were rescheduled, there was a chance it wouldn’t have worked out.
We had balloons, confetti, flowers and other miscellaneous Valentines décor. Every time we opened the car door to grab something, a balloon would plunge out into the brisk air or pop and deflate in the car. Papers flying, balloons taking a life of their own and near “freezing” temperatures (hey, we live in So Cal, haha). All in all, it was a super fun session and at the end of the day, I see everything as a learning experience!
Do you have a session coming up and the winds are taking on a life of their own? Here are a few ways to make your photography session in the wind awesome!
Stay inside as much as possible! Seems like a rather obvious one. But any chance I had, I suggested everyone stay in the car so they can warm up. I also had a blanket in my car which is always nice for cold days! Another pro tip, always keep a blankey in your car! ;)
If you have props, they might not ALL work out and that’s totally okay! While using the balloons in photos, it helps to hold them at the bottom of the balloon bundle and behind you.
Bring hair clips for anyone with long hair to clip around it until everyone is ready for the photo.
Gloves! This goes with the blanket and warmth tip. But if you’re anything like me, and your hands get cold easily; wearing gloves (while photographing) or as the model helps so much! The air was so cold, toward the end I could barely feel my hands anymore, which makes photography a bit more challenging to press buttons! Also, if you have those warming sticks, maybe add those into the gloves too!
Don’t stress out! No matter what, keep your game face on and stay positive! I kept that in mind the whole session and knew that at the end of the day everything was going to be okay! If you’re positive, those around you will also stay energetic and positive!
